Oakland Hop Harvest Ale

rawImageThis spring, Bison planted Cascade hops all over Oakland. We chose to grow Cascade hops because, after consulting several of our organic hops farmers, we were told that Oakland’s climate was perfect for this beautiful Pacific Northwest hop varietal. We were told not to expect much from the hops in the first year. But, much to our surprise and delight, our Cascade hops grew up fast and strong and we were able to harvest a good amount and use them as a dry hop in a special batch of our Hop Cuvée.

The largest yield of hops came from our friends at the People’s Victory Garden–– an edible garden created by the people of Oakland for the people of Oakland. The goal of People’s Victory Garden is to raise the collective consciousness about eating healthy and living actively––something near and dear to Bison’s heart. No artificial fertilizers, chemical pesticides or herbicides of any kind are used on the soil at the People’s Victroy Garden, essentially making it organic (without the certification).

In addition to the People’s Victory Garden, cascade hops were grown in several other local community and home gardens throughout Oakland.
